Funding Alert: Air Pollution Research – EU, UK, US, Thailand, Senegal, and Panama

The European Commission is offering up to €73 million in funding for research projects aimed at improving air quality under its LIFE program. Successful projects can receive between €2 million and €10 million to support initiatives that restore and enhance the environment. Applications are open until September 19th, 2024.

The European Commission’s Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency has issued a second Life call with a focus on air quality and pollution. Projects can secure between €10 million and €30 million in funding. The deadline for applications is September 5. 2024.

Horizon Europe is launching a call for proposals on September 17 to fund projects developing zero-pollution solutions for cities and regions. Successful projects will share a €20 million pot. Applications close on February 11th, 2025.

The UK’s Private Enterprise in Low-Income Countries program, a collaboration between the Centre for Economic Policy Research and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, is seeking proposals to tackle climate and environmental challenges in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The program offers private funding for projects examining the impact of industrial production on air quality and carbon emissions. To apply, submit a full proposal by August 19th, 2024.

The Climate & Clean Air Coalition, a UN-backed partnership of Bangladesh, Canada, Ghana, Mexico, Sweden, and the US, is offering grants to boost air quality and control across various regions. Applicants have until August 30th, 2024 to apply for the following opportunities:

The Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago is offering grants to local groups and organizations working to combat air pollution. Selected applicants will receive funding to install air quality monitors and publicly share the data collected. Applications are due September 10.

The US Environmental Justice Data Fund is offering grants to help communities disproportionately affected by climate change and pollution. With a focus on air and water quality, the $4 million fund aims to empower communities to use data to address environmental hazards. Proposals are due August 30th, 2024.

America’s Seed Fund, backed by the National Science Foundation (NSF), is currently accepting proposals from US-based small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) developing environmental technologies. Selected startups can receive up to $2 million in funding. NSF welcomes project pitches year-round. If chosen, companies will have a one-year window to submit a full proposal after receiving an official invitation from the NSF.
