Review: AIRVALENT – The smallest CO2 Monitor

Since I caught COVID last month (for the first time after 4 years), I’ve become increasingly concerned about the air quality in the places that I visit or stay for a long period of time like an airplane. So, I decided to try out the AIRVALENT CO2 air quality monitor to see if it could help me identify badly ventilated indoor environments.

The app allows users to download the data and manage various devices. You can customize the e-ink display with various designs according to your taste and there are a plethora of settings that are needed in order to operate the device like ºC/ºF, Sound On/Off, Date Format, Language (English and German), Firmware Updates, Measurement Intervals, Notifications, etc.

My Thoughts

I decided to do an extensive comparison of the AIRVALENT against the most commonly seen CO2 monitor in the market the aranet4. Data offers us the confidence that a product works according to specifications and delivers what it is advertised. Keep in mind, that aranet4 is not a reference standard monitor. Either way, I was so happy to see that the correlation coefficient and coefficient of determination were superb for all the sensors in the device.

The battery gives good autonomy to the monitor, I have set it to take samples every 10 minutes which can operate the device for 26 days. Samples every 2 minutes give a 10-day autonomy. There are more options.

The AIRVALENT is a good companion. Unlike standard air quality monitors, AirValent focuses solely on CO2, directly addressing concerns about stuffy, poorly ventilated spaces. Increased CO2 indicates higher occupancy or inadequate ventilation, both of which can give us a proxy for elevated pathogen transmission risks.
